SWIMMING - Greta Andersen from Denmark took the gold in today’s final of the women’s 100m freestyle. In a great race she beat American favourite Ann Curtis. Marie Vaessen from Holland came in third.
The tension at the Wembley Pool was high, with eight girls that were very well matched. Yet, from the start it was a battle between Curtis and Andersen. Both girls had already competed in the fourth heat, which the tall American had won, with one tenth of a second to spare.
This time Anderson took the lead and had the race in safe keeping with 10m to go. Curtis’ challenge was strong but was too little too late. Anderson’s time of 66.3 seconds was slower than her Olympic record in the semi-finals. But that probaly didn't bother the Danish champion much.
