Nobody's a match for the versatile Swede
MODERN PENTATHLON - Willie Grut is the most versatile sportsman in these Olympics. In the modern pentathlon he
was in a league of his own winning three of the five events.
It was never a real question of who would take the gold. Riding and fencing, the first two events, produced the same winner: captain Willy Grut. The third event, the rapid fire pistol, produced a slight upset. Bruno Riem from Switzerland won it, Grut was 'only' fifth.
Luckily for Grut swimming was next and his opponents didn't even come close. After the race of 300 meters in open air and in pouring rain, the Hungarian Szondy was 4 seconds slower than the Swedish captain.
In the final event, the running, an eight place was more than enough for Grut, who finished with a score of 16. American George Moore came in second. His sum of all his rankings was 47. This proves once more that Willy Grut was the more than deserved winner of the Modern Pentathlon.
