Jamaican triumph in 400m
ATHLETICS - In what was a thrilling final A.S. Wint from Jamaica defeated his compatriot H.H. McKenley in the final of the 400 metres. Wints winning time equalled the Olympic record he had run earlier this week.
McKenley was clearly fastest out of the blocks and by the halfway point he was about a second clear of the rest of the pack.
But then Wint stepped it up a gear and soon had closed the gap with McKenley. He finally beat him by one fifth of a second.
American Mal Whitfield completed the podium. It was the first gold medal for Jamaica in these Olympics. The British national anthem was played, although there was still no gold for the home country.
