ATHLETICS - Fanny Blankers-Koen is the star of the athletics tournament. On the final day she took a fourth gold medal, thus equalling the achievement of Jesse Owens in 1936.
After two runners it was the surprising Danish team in lane six that was leading the pack. But the top teams kept their nerves and waited for the final metres to give their best. It has to be said that not all of them kept their nerves. The British and the Australians had bad final batton exchanges what possibly cost them a place.
Meanwhile there was no stopping the Dutch team. Fanny Blankers-Koen, already victorious on the 100, 200 and 80 metres hurdles, showed once again her supreme speed and left the others fighting for silver. Australia took it, beating Canada and Great Britain.
