ATHLETICS - In one of the greatest races ever, Emil Zatopek ran right away from his opponents in the final of the 10.000 metres. He finished in just under 30 minutes, a new Olympic record.
Viljo Heino, the world record holder of Finland, kept up at first but when his pace dropped he stepped out of the race. The Frenchman with Algerian roots Mimoun beat Albertsson from Sweden to take the silver medal. Although this distance has for a long time been the favored distance of the Finnish athletes, this time none of them made it to the podium.
The British runners performed as expected. Stan Cox and Jim Peters finished 6th and 7th and came close to their personal best. Maybe they performed even better than that because after the finish the officials weren't quite sure if they hadn't run one lap too many...
