Ostermeyer takes first gold medal

ATHLETICS - At half past three the first final of these Olympic Games started. Without a qualification round 21 women started in the final of the discus throwing event. The gold went to France.

It was a close call. The top three finished within less than a meter of each other. Micheline Ostermeyer came out on top. The French athlete isn't a discus thrower by nature. Putting the shot and high jumping is what she is more experienced at.

But because of the absence of the favorites from the Soviet Union, Ostermeyer decided to have a go. By throwing the discus 41m92 far, she beat the Italian Gentile. France almost scored a double, but fellow compatriot Mazeas threw the discus just a few centimeters shorter than Gentile.
