Winter wins on hot summer day
ATHLETICS - The Wembley crowd enjoyed another blazingly hot day. The high jump qualifying session started before lunch and got its conclusion in the afternoon. Australian Jack Winter won.
27 athletes started their qualifying session at 11 am. Wembley wasn't filled to capacity, but there was already an eager atmosphere in the stadium. The jumpers were divided into two groups and they had to clear 1m87 to reach the final. Only seven failed and American McGrew was almost number eight. He failed twice at qualification height, but he cleared the bar at his final attempt.
The final in the afternoon produced even more drama. All of the American favorites failed at 1m98. In fact the only one to clear that height was Australian record holder Jack Winter. Bjorn Paulson came in second at 1m95. He tied with two US and one French athlete but made fewer mistakes.
