Dillard is fastest man on the planet

ATHLETICS - In what was a very close race, Harrison Dillard was crowned the winner of the 100 metres. His winning time equalled the Olympic record of Jesse Owens: 10.3 seconds. Britains hope McCorquodale ran a strong final and finished just outside the podium.

There was some uncertainty at first on who was the winner. Barney Ewell thought he broke the tape first, flung up his arms and danced with joy. The photofinish proved different and Dillard was proclaimed the winner. Ewell, as a true sportsman, congratulated his American compatriot.

It was a bizarre triumph for Dillard, who normally excels in the 110 metres hurdles. Unfortunately for him, he failed to qualify in that event. Luckily we'll see him together with Ewell and Mel Patton, who came in fifth, again in 4x100 metres relay.

Third man on the podium was Lloyd LaBeach from Panama. He narrowly beat homerunner Alastair McCorquodale. The other Brit in the final, Emmanuel McDonald Bailey, came in sixth and last.
