American divers dazzle Empire Pool crowd

DIVING - Securing the first three places, the USA maintained their pre-eminence in today’s final of the Men’s Springboard Diving Contest.

With his last dive, the Double Twisting 1½ Somersault Forward, former US Army pilot M. Anderson was awarded two 10’s, the only maximum scores shown today. Yet it was the more consistent B. Harlan who took the gold. For all but one of his efforts did he score less than eight points. Sammy Lee, a former US Army doctor of Korean origin, was awarded the bronze medal.

The conditions in the Empire Pool, the first covered venue to be used for Olympic diving, were perfect. Yet, this did not seem to help the European divers in bridging the gap with their American competitors. The best of them, Raymond Mullinghausen, of France, was 15 points behind the fourth-placed Capilla of Mexico.

P. Heatly, who had subsequently won three Empire & Commonwealth titles for Scotland, was 13th. On August 5th we will know if the American dominance remains untouched in the Men’s High Diving contest as well.
